Have you ever wondered who named the Pacific Ocean, or who was the first person to complete a circumnavigation of the globe, well in this article you will learn all about the man who did it all, Ferdinand Magellan!
Ferdinand Magellan was born in Oporto, Portugal in 1480. When he was only twelve, he began serving the queen of Portugal as a page. In a page school he learned about cartography, astronomy, and celestial navigation. Ferdinand joined the Portuguese service fleet to sail in 1505. He decided to explore because he thought it would give him fame and fortune. King Charles V of Spain sponsored Magellan’s voyage. In 1519, Magellan started his journey. He was the first European to set sail on the Pacific Ocean. Ferdinand Magellan named the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Ocean because it means, “calm and, peaceful sea”.
In 1519-1522, Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to sail across what he named the Pacific Ocean. He had hoped to find a western sea route to the Spice Islands. During the voyage, he did not tell anyone where they were going, not even the captains! He had caused many problems between the captains of the other ships by keeping the secret. Magellan had taken eight voyages. Ferdinand Magellan was killed by a Filipino tribe in Mactan, Philippines on April 27, 1521 during a battle. Magellan was killed months before he and his crew had become the first man to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The only native peoples he encountered were a Filipino tribe. Ferdinand Magellan helped those who followed him by finding different sea routes. Magellan was famous because he was the first person to complete circumnavigation around the world. Ferdinand had a sea route named after him because he founded it, it is called “The Strait of Magellan.” Magellan was very brave for not telling his crew or even the captains about where they were going. Another reason why he is brave is because he sailed through the toughest weather and didn't stop until he reached his destination. Magellan became famous during his journey. As you know, before he completed his journey he died. The rest of his crew completed the journey for him.
