Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Genoa was on the water and Columbus enjoyed watching the ships come and go in the harbor. He was very curious about sailing as a child and he knew he wanted to become a sailor. He self taught himself to read and write. He and his brother loved making maps and charts of the sea. He worked as a weaver with his father. When he was a teenager, he wanted to explore the world so he became a sailor. He went to Portugal to make a living. He became a sea captain and sailed to many places. He married Felipa Perestrello E Moniz in Lisbon in 1479. They had one son. The King of Portugal refused to give him money to explore for a route to the Indies. While waiting to ask the King of Spain, his wife passed away. Nine months later, he finally got to see Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand and they gave him the money and a crew to set sail for America to find new things. Columbus sailed on to find a western route from Europe to Asia. He was heading to Asia and thought if he went west, would get there quicker. On the way, he bumped into North America by accident. Christopher Columbus thought he already hit the Indies, but he didn't. He was actually on an island in the Caribbean. He had to take a different ship home because his other ship sank. Also, his dream was to find gold and riches but that dream never came true. Christopher Colombus wanted to go to Asia to find gold and riches, which was his dream. He got very distracted with everything that was happening around him, that he forgot what he wanted most. Christopher Columbus and his many long voyages were beneficial even if he never found gold. One reason he was a big help to his country, Spain is that he conquered a new Native American tribe. Spain later took over the tribe and they became Spain's slave workers. The men of the tribe either worked on a ship or they went to war. The women of the tribe were captured by Spain and worked either as cooks, as seamstress, or as maids. If they were lucky, that worked for the queen or king. Columbus is known for his discoveries and also for being very cruel to the Native American people that he encountered on his explorations. |
What mistake did Columbus make about selling to the Indies and finding gold.
